International Sport Security Conference 2011
150 key figures from the worlds of sport and security gathered in Doha for the first edition of the International Sport Security Conference.
The event, staged by the Qatar International Academy for Security Studies (QIASS) and the ICSS addressed a number of key issues. Panels discussed, amongst other topics, new developments in major event security and lessons learned from past major event organisation.
The athlete perspective on sport security and performance was given by multiple Olympic gold medal winner Michael Johnson and former world number one tennis player Monica Seles. Ron Noble, the secretary general of Interpol, presented his vision for international cooperation in sport security, while Leonard McCarthy, integrity vice president of the World Bank, spoke on security, economic development and the rule of law.
The elements of security covered, it should be added, also included such issues as doping, illegal betting and match-fixing.
